Historian Alexis de Tocqueville once stated, "The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens." His point is that we should not look to the government for social programs, but rather to society itself, with citizens helping their neighbors. We see this in times of tragedy, but why is this not the norm? Why do we have so many people in this country relying on the government rather than building healthy communities? The growth of government weakens community bonds; it does not strengthen them.
